The two ladies I met on Sunday at the NOFA conference had absolutely NO patience for my argument about not being ready to have chickens because I don't have a chicken coop. They said that I could literally use ANYTHING to make a chicken coop. They said that I was making too big of a deal about it. One of them uses a kiddie playhouse in her front yard as a chicken coop (I'm going to have to drive by there one of these days just to see it).
Well I came back energized, determined to move forward on this chicken thing. I looked on craigslist and saw this:
And, guess what?
I got it.
Chicken coop - check.
Now - where can I get chickens where I don't have to get 25 of them? I'm thinking that 5 is a good number.
Awesome! That will make a very cute chicken house. I often see chickens for sale on Craigslist around here. Keep your eyes open and let some people in the area know you're looking for a few birds. You never know what might turn up.

ReplyDeleteTwo things I noticed right away about using this child's playhouse for your birds:
1. It will be SUPER easy to clean since it's plastic! You can entirely hose it out!
2. You will need some insulation. I would suggest snuggly stacking hay/straw bales all around & on top of it, enclosing all but what you will use as a door & a window. You need both (door & window): the door for your & the chicken's access and the window for light & ventilation. Also, since it IS plastic, do be careful if you put in a bulb for heat and/or light! You'll have extra concerns there that you don't melt any plastic. But, again, I'd be happy to advise about that stuff via e-mail. :)
