Friday Afternoon

This picture is the result of three things:
1) Friday afternoons at work are lightly attended and I had plans last night that meant I needed to stay in town after work
2) I'm having problems making the neckwarmer I showed the other day. For starters, I don't know how to knit. I can't figure out the pattern acronyms and my yarn is too chunky and uneven to tell if I'm doing the stitches correctly
3) My internet connection from home is too slow to watch videos

Soo -- at the end of the day yesterday, I used whatever implements were handy at my desk and practiced some stitches while watching the videos online. Please tell me I'm not the only person on the planet who's done this!

  1. That is to funny! While I can not say that I have resorted to using pens to knit I have thought about it. I must say that I really enjoy reading your blog. I must admit though that I do not write comments often (3 kids/Homeschool). Good luck at your knitting, it took me while to get the hang of it too but don't give up before you know it you will be doing a k1p2 in your sleep.

  2. Hi Shannan,
I looked at your profile and can see you're in SC. I feel your pain! I lived in Camden and worked in Sumter for 3 years, but eventually beat it back north. I'll come back down south when they stop fighting the civil war!

  3. Hey Jordan,

Yeah I am in the Columbia area right now. I know what you mean about the civil war, there are some down here that do not understand the south lost. I have been down here three years to long and can not wait until the day I live further north than I do now. Ah, someday! It is just so much fun being stuck somewhere that you never wanted to live in the first place. Enjoy your weekend.

  4. "While watching the videos online." Huh?? Did we miss something? Are there some Blueberry Hills-recommended videos I've missed? Or, do you mean how-to-knit videos?

    Happy Sunday!

  5. Too funny! Not a bad idea, but we're blocked from watching youtube from work and my connexion from home is rather slooow. These were how-to-knit videos. I'm assuming you have satellite internet? How do you like it? I've been considering it but read a TON of terrible reviews, so stopped considering it.

  6. Really??? You've read bad reviews of satellite Internet? Weird!

We've been very happy with it. In the 3 years since we've been living here, we've only been without twice. And, both of those times were for between 1 and 2 weeks before the technicians could arrive (which WAS pretty aggravating). But, both were due to Mother Nature and couldn't be avoided: a lightning strike the first time and a massive wind storm (plus some line deterioration) the 2nd.

Yeah, I guess there are some hiccups with it, but then, nothin's perfect. Overall, we're quite happy with it. We have HughesNet. If you DO think about getting it, I CAN give you a couple of recommendations & ideas, though. But, if you're on dial-up now and can afford the initial dish & installation fees, I would DEFINITELY recommend that you go for it! Monthly fees (for the cheapest / "slowest" of 3 plans, which is what we have) are $59.99.

  7. P.S. With a router, we feed our satellite Internet into 4 computers quite easily: my laptop (wireless anywhere in the house), Tom's laptop out in his office in the garage, my desktop in the house, and Tom's Mac in the house.

  8. I think I googled "satellite internet review" and got HUNDREDS of terrible reviews of both hughes and wildblue. Many of them said it's no faster than dialup. If anyone else reads this and wants to add their 2 cents, please do. I may do it anyway because if it's good, it will be really, really good (compared to what I have now)!

  9. jordan...
I checked the Idiot's Guide to Knitting and Crocheting out of the library so many times that I finally got a coupon out of the Sunday paper for one of the craft stores and went and bought one. I still have things that slip me up, but I don't crochet and I've thought of trying a little of that next. I'm not a good knitter, but parts of it are pretty easy and I can make a dishcloth...
CHICKEN MAMA - I have spent HOURS setting up and redoing the wireless router and range expander here since we added on and moved things around...here's hoping it was a success as it's been a few weeks now

  10. Hey, Karen Sue! You know, we definitely have had some problems with our wireless router, too, and some of the computers (in the house) ARE hard-wired. Fortunately, when your ceiling isn't yet finished, you can just drill thru the I-beams and fish the cable thru the house that way! ;)

But, one thing I learned while researching the problems we were having with getting a connection between the router and the wireless modems was that, apparently, CFLs (you know, the "healthy" lightbulbs) actually distort & affect the range of wireless modems! Go figure!

Jordan, I haven't had any luck GETTING the follow-up comments e-mailed to me from here (when I chose that option, which I always do). What am I doing wrong??

So, Karen Sue, I grabbed your e-mail address from your profile and will send you a copy of this post / comment in case you don't see it here. AND, I noticed that you're a quilter! When you have time, check out my mom's quilting blog at http://mamapeashandmadebabyquilts.blogspot.com (www.mamapeashandmadebabyquilts.blogspot.com). She's an amazing quilter!

  11. Chicken Mama - I have NO idea why this stuff doesn't work well! These are all standard options in Blogger. I've even made it so that anyone can post with no captcha, because people were having problems posting. I'm STILL having problems posting. I just looked at all the options again, and there's nothing more I can change! Your mom has Blogger too - any similar problems with her blog?
