Recent Casualties

These two lightbulbs are Sylvania Double Life bulbs and they each lasted a day.  These two are bulb numbers 4 and 5.  The first 3 were GE cheap bulbs; my last Sylvania Double Life bulb is in the socket now.

I have no idea why the bulbs are failing so quickly.  I eliminated the timer and the extension cord as suspects.  The two suspects left are the cord and socket or ... the chickens.  They can indeed reach this light and either hit it inadvertently in transit somewhere or hit it advertenly (must be the opposite of inadvertently, right?, and mean on purpose?)

Do chickens do that?  Murder light bulbs??  Those murderous beasts!  Sentence is to lay eggs, almost daily for the rest of their lives.

  1. I would guess the socket. I have one socket that does that. Never lost a bulb fast, except in the one socket.

  2. Yup, those sweet chickies will peck at a bulb if they can get at it. Usually they break it (which isn't good walking around in barefeet as they be or their tendency to ingest the glass shards) but since yours aren't getting broken, I'm wondering if it ISN'T something in your hook-up.

  3. I'm gonna get a new socket and cord at lunch, so hopefully will eliminate the problem, if that's it. Blankety-blank quality of things these days!

  4. I have seen them blow when they are a size too big..they overheat and then pop they are out. Have they all been the same wattage?? That might be worth a try.

  5. (You may already have this) be sure to get the chrome shield that goes around the bulb to make a "worklight" set up...some even come with wire across the bulb area to keep the chicken from getting to the bulbs...
