Some Plant Questions

What is this stuff?  It grows around a big old tree by my front door.  Last year I thought it was a weed and weed-whacked it a bunch of times before I realized that it smells good and the leaves taste good.  It tastes like parsley or celery. (Yes, I've still got snow...)

Below is rhubarb, looking like it's getting ready to flower.  Should I let it flower, or is it better to get rid of these blossoms-to-be?

  1. The top looks like lovage...an herb...often used in soups, etc. because of its similar taste to celery...check it out...it's been a while since I have seen any...should I bring over my herb books?

  2. Oh, I bet that's what it is. Extremely cool! I'll let it grow out this year and dry leaves and seeds. Yay! The source of all wisdom (the internet) says it can grow to 6 feet. It'll be the big, weedy-looking bush by the front door.

  3. Yes, quick! Whack the blossom stalks off on your rhubarb!

  4. My lovage plant is HUGE. Easily 6', maybe more. It has an extreme celery scent, almost peppery. I save the seeds to use in place of celery seed.

  5. Your property is so much fun! So many interesting things to discover and revive? Why would someone want new construction in a subdivision?

  6. The discovery part is the really fun part of living in an old farmhouse. Too bad I screwed up some of it last year by trying to do too much, too quickly. I dug out the horseradish. I mowed lilies and peonies. This year I'm going to let more stuff "happen" and watch to see what stuff is before I destroy anything else! It's much more boring to live in a brand-new house!
