Sparky Diagnosis: Abdominal Hernia

He's scheduled to be operated on Wednesday morning. I have his xrays and information in case it turns into an emergency before then. I've told many people that I wouldn't do extraordinary things to keep an animal like this alive, but somehow the decisions don't seem so straightforward any more.

Am I doing the right thing? I don't know. But I just can't think about the alternative right now.

  1. Aw, doggone it, poor little Sparky. I know we would make the decision to do the surgery. I'm hoping all goes well until next Wednesday. He's gonna wonder what the heck hit him then but I'll bet within a couple of days after that, he'll be back to the same spunky guy he was before his encounter with whatever made him exert more than his body could handle. (He may decide to be an inside cat permanently now It can be dangerous out there!)

Thanks for keeping us updated, Jordan.

  2. I guess it depends on how old he is and whether the operation will fix him up good and proper. I'd have the surgery done too.

  3. Sorry to hear about Sparky - third on the surgery here.

  4. He is all of 1-1/2 tender years old. So if this works, he'll hopefully have many, many years with me at the homestead.

  5. Hey, glad I could help!

If you think he might injure himself more by being "active" between now & Wednesday, put him in a crate (kennel). And, if he's already feeling logy, he shouldn't mind.

We'd do the surgery, too . . . even tho we couldn't afford. (I keep crossing my fingers that nothing will "happen" to any of the animals right now!)

    Keep us posted!

  6. I'd do the surgery! We ran into a similar situation with our cat earlier this year - urinary blockage, catheter, weekend stay at the vets, etc. If we hadn't done it, we would have felt that we were letting him die because paying for his medical care was not "convenient." We fixed the cat.

  7. Yeah, he is young enough and when we put ours to sleep there were several other issues, too. Is this from tree climbing/jumping?? It may just cure him of ever wanting to be very UP... although I have a dog who's been skunked twice and my parents used to take porcupine quills out of one of our dogs on a regular basis! He's hoping he is older and wiser after Wed!!
